چکیده

Exploiting the information about the vocal tract shape that produced the speech has been appealing to speech researchers and scientists for a long period of time. Experimental studies that included the articulatory information from physiological measurements supported the idea that this information could be useful in a number of areas of speech science and technology. However, the estimation of articulatory trajectories from the speech acoustic signal is known as a difficult and ill-posed problem. Among the relatively recent methods proposed to solve this problem are those trying to integrate linguistic knowledge in the form of phonetic or phonological constraints. This paper reviews and discusses upon methods for applying phonetic and phonological constraints to provide unique solutions to the acoustic-to-articulatory inversion. Key-Words: speech inversion, acoustic-to-articulatory mapping, vocal-tract estimation, phonetics, phonology

Integrating phonetic boundary discrimina

In this study, we investigate methods of (a) detecting phonetic boundaries directly from acoustics, and (b) integrating these into HMM-based speech recognition. We test the hypothesis that detecting phone boundaries may be easier using phonological features rather than phonetic or direct acoustic information. We also show how HMMs can be more attuned to the transition of phone boundaries by exp...

A New Phonetic Model for Continuous Speech Recognition Systems

The main goal of this work is to describe a new model for a large vocabulary continuous speech recognition system using a phonetic-phonological approach. This work proposes a statistical phonetic structure, applied at the phoneticphonological level, to improve the speech recognition performance in systems with phonetic-phonological modeling. It is showed that the general likelihood scores are i...

Interaction and representational integration: evidence from speech errors.

We examine the mechanisms that support interaction between lexical, phonological and phonetic processes during language production. Studies of the phonetics of speech errors have provided evidence that partially activated lexical and phonological representations influence phonetic processing. We examine how these interactive effects are modulated by lexical frequency. Previous research has demo...

Erratum to: Grammatical constraints on phonological encoding in speech production.

To better understand the influence of grammatical encoding on the retrieval and encoding of phonological word-form information during speech production, we examine how grammatical class constraints influence the activation of phonological neighbors (words phonologically related to the target--e.g., MOON, TWO for target TUNE). Specifically, we compare how neighbors that share a target's grammati...

The Role of Phonology in Speech Processing

In this paper, I discuss the role of phonology in the modelling of speech processing. It will be argued tha t recent models of nonlinear representa t ions in phonology should be put to use in speech processing systems (SPS). Models ol phonology aim at the reconst ruct ion of the phonological knowledge that speakers possess and utilize in speech prow cessing. The most important function of phono...
